It’s the Fourth of July, a good day to start saving democracy

It’s the Fourth of July 2022. And damn, do we need to look hard again at those words that kicked this whole experiment off 246 years ago.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed,

That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.

Now, we know they meant it when they said “Men.” White, propertied men. Maybe a few of their wives and daughters. It wouldn’t have occurred to even the abolitionists among them that anybody else needed to brought into their realm.

So now it is up to us as their inheritors to take up the mantle. One would like to think that rocketed forward into the 21st century, that at least some of the men enlightened enough to construct that document and the Constitution that followed it 13 years later would have come around to include women, immigrants (particularly since that’s what they were), and the descendants of slaves. We can also conclude that they really should have made some things a helluva lot clearer. 

Since they didn’t, we have to take over in the void they left.
